Skin Care
Skin care is very important to a person with a SCI. Pressure sores, or decubitus, can develop in a short amount of time and can become infected. The first defense against this is proper positioning and pressure relief. Whether in bed or in a wheelchair, pressure relief is crucial. Turning, re-positioning, cushions, pressure relieving mattresses and having a care person checking the skin daily are ways to prevent sores. Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of water and maintaining proper nutrition are also important. Treating a spot early is also important. If you do get a pressure sore, check with a nurse or physician promptly regarding treatment. If left untreated, a pressure sore can lead to serious infection, sepsis and even death. Common areas for pressure are the buttocks and hips as well as the feet and ankles.
